Playdom LogoSupercharged from its latest round of funding, Playdom has just announced the acquisition of social game developer Hive7. This marks the 8th publicized investment for Playdom as it vies for market share against the kingpin Zynga. Hive7 was found in 2005 and has made titles such as Youtopia, Kick-Off, Sindicate and its premier game called Knighthood. The Palo-Alto based company has already joined Playdom’s offices although the terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Hive7 is reportedly working on their next title after having moved into Playdom’s headquarters. What’s interesting is that according to Appdata, there is a sharp drop in Hive7′s userbase on Facebook, nearly a 60,000 drop in MAU within a day. It is possible that Hive7′s most of titles may be discontinued as was the case when Playdom acquired David King’s company Green Patch and killed its flagship title Lil Green Patch.

“We welcome Hive7′s employees and contractors to our family,” says Playdom CEO John Pleasants. “Our studio structure enables us to add stand-alone development start-ups like Hive7 to our portfolio without disrupting the cohesion and collegiality that made it such a special place to work.

Playdom’s expansion on Facebook seems to be coming along well with investments in Offbeat Creations, Trippert Labs, Three Melons, Green Patch, Merscom, MetroGames and Acclaim. The money to fuel this has come from the massive rounds of $33m recently and $43m last November. The social game publisher now has studios in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Oregon, Colorado, North Carolina, Argentina and South Asia.

With a new CTO, innovative social games and a plethora of acquisitions, can Playdom gain ground against the likes of Zynga, EA and Crowdstar? What moves would you make if you were Playdom?
