Top 5 Political Viral Video FAILS

Is YouTube turning politics into a joke? Every since Obama introduced politics to social media more and more political candidates are trying to go viral with their campaigns on YouTube, but for many it just isn’t working. Check out five of the biggest political YouTube FAILS after the jump.

John McCain

I thought John McCain was a serious politician, but after his latest campaign video, ‘Opera for Obama’, hit YouTube I’m not so sure. The video bashes Rodney Glassman, McCain’s competition for Arizona Senator, making fun of his singing and comparing him to (gasp!) Obama.

Why is this video a fail? For starters, the production quality is the opposite of great. The whole thing is viewed through the singing mouth of Glassman and that’s just weird. It’s pretty hard to even listen to what Glassman is saying with the distracting music and graphics. But more than that, I am appalled by the fact that McCain’s campaign stooped to the level of making fun of his opponent’s love for singing. I mean, seriously?

Christine O’Donnell

You’ve probably heard about Christine O’Donnell. She’s the Republican candidate in the Delaware Senatorial election; she is fighting off rumors that she used to be a witch and lied about having a Princeton education. Oh, and she’s you.

That’s right. Christine O’Donnell launched a really weird video campaign in which she repeatedly says the phrase, “I’m you”. Check out the second video from the campaign below.

The “I’m You” campaign sparked a ton of parodies on YouTube, including a new song from the Gregory Brothers. However, YouTube popularity isn’t necessarily good when it comes to political campaigns, particularly when most of the feedback is from people making fun of you, and ridiculous parodies of your campaign are showing up right alongside your video in the YouTube Suggestions.

Dan Freilich

And then there’s Dan Freilich. Dan Freilich saw the success of Old Spice’s ‘Man Your Man Could Smell Like’ campaign and just had to replicate it. Only problem is, he can’t act one bit. How can you take someone seriously as a senator who promotes himself with a video like this? Freilich only received 10% of the votes in the Democratic Primary election for Vermont Senator. Think it had anything to do with this video?

I should also point out, for comparisons sake, that Freilich isn’t the only politician to create an Old Spice spoof as part of his campaign. Jerry Labriola created one as well for his Connecticut congressional campaign. Sufficed to say, I think Labriola’s campaign was much more professional and successful than Freilich’s (although I still think it’s pretty weird that candidates are trying to go viral with funny videos, instead of focusing on the issues at hand).

Basil Marceaux

The story of Basil Marceaux is actually one political YouTube FAIL that became a WIN. When a video of Basil Marceaux, the eccentric candidate for Tennessee Governer, it didn’t help him win the election but it did help him achieve instant fame on the web and beyond.

I am categorizing this video as a FAIL, because it spread the word about Marceaux to the world not because he was a fantastic candidate but rather because he was super odd with some very unconventional ideas. In the end, he got less than 1 percent of the vote. That being said, he wasn’t going to win the election, and this video introduced over 1.4 million people to Basil Marceaux. As an internet celeb he now has a following to share his unconventional ideas with.

Christine O’Donnell (Again)

Christine O’Donnell stopped being “you” just long enough to come out with another political viral video FAIL. This one is a ridiculous fake movie trailer that portrays O’Donnell’s opponent, Chris Coons, as “The Taxman”. What makes this even more ridiculous is the fact is its allusion to Antoine Dodson and ‘The Bed Intruder Song’, saying “Hide your will, hide your lights, ’cause he’s taxing everything out here.”
