President Obama Using Social Media to Pressure Congress on #My2K

It’s no secret that President Barack Obama’s team knows what it’s doing when it comes to social media. Today, the president in an address from The White House urged the public to tweet using hashtag #MY2K telling their congressional representatives not to raise taxes on the middle class.

If Congress doesn’t renew the George W. Bush-era tax cuts, taxes for middle-class families would go up by $2,200 (for a family of four) in 2013. A number of budget cuts and tax hikes, including this one, will automatically take effect if a deal isn’t reached in time, sending the United States over the so-called “fiscal cliff.”

Standing behind the president during his address were a number of middle-class Americans who would see their taxes increase if Congress doesn’t reach a deal and the president sign legislation before the new year.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned; when the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold, Congress listens,” Obama said.

A tweet from the president’s account, @BarackObama, which was posted at approximately 12:13 p.m. today, says: “Call your members of Congress. Write them an email. Tweet it using the hashtag #My2K.” —President Obama

The tweets are already pouring in, and #My2K was already trending on Twitter by the end of Obama’s remarks. Here is a sampling of posts:
