PriceSpotting App Asks the Crowd to Compare Grocery Store Prices

Rather than relying on circulars and mailers, today’s grocery shopper can turn to their iPhone to find the best deals on groceries. PriceSpotting, a new iOS app from tech startup Blue Tiger Labs, is relying on shoppers to help crowdsource this information.

The way it works is that app users can scan items at their local stores to identify the cost of different products for sale at different stores. The app uses GPS to help shoppers find groceries in their area and access the pricing data that is shared by other users. Users get incentives for participating. For every scan, they can earn points. Pretty soon app users will be able to redeem these points for gift cards.

Soon the app will have a feature that lets users comparison shop by product by store so that they can find the best savings on any given item. So shoppers can decide where they purchase their Starbucks coffee, Horizon organic milk or Haagen Dazs ice cream, for instance. (Via The Washington Post).
