Ars Technica asks a brilliant question:
“How, exactly, do you spend five years laboring in the dark jungles of music licensing, carefully trying to bring free and legal music downloads to the masses, only to turn your hugely-publicized launch event into a byword for ‘fiasco’ by not actually having the licenses… and still launching your service anyway?”
Qtrax is busy doing exactly that. You may remember Qtrax, the ad-supported music service that embarrassed itself in January by making some very public announcements about its major label support, only to have to retract them shortly afterward. And one month later, despite repeated assurances, the CEO is still having trouble rounding up the official licenses.
The CEO also said that while he’s pleased with the “behind-the-scenes” support he’s received from the labels, he wasn’t as thrilled by “having 150,000 journalists around the world” comment on his actions, noting that this was “a very curious experience to go through.”
