New York City named its first-ever chief digital officer: Rachel Sterne, founder of citizen news site GroundReport and digital strategy firm Upward Strategy, CNET reported.

Sterne will leave both companies to take on her new role, in which she will be tasked with aiding the city government with its use of digital technology to communicate with residents, as well as bringing social media and other tools to municipal agencies, negotiating partnerships, and serving as a representative of the technology community to the government, according to CNET, which added that one of her first missions will likely be an overhaul of NYC.gov to make it more user-friendly and add resources.

“My goal in this role is to help the world’s greatest city become the world’s most innovative city through online and mobile technologies that help citizens and enhance the quality of services,” Sterne said in a statement.
