Reddit Used by Six Percent of Americans

Six percent of online American adults are Reddit users, according to a nationally representative survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.

“After the election and the Boston Marathon Bombing it seemed Reddit had reached the mainstream conversation and we thought it was a good time to get a read on general usage,” said Aaron Smith, a Pew spokesman.

Previous Pew studies have shown that two-thirds of Americans use Facebook and between 13 and 16 percent use Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter. Tumblr, like Reddit, draws six percent of U.S. users.

Reddit is especially popular with younger men — which will come as no surprise to critics of the site. Nearly one in six male Internet users between the ages of 18 and 29 said they use reddit, compared with one in 20 women in the same age range. Men in their 30s and 40s were also heavily represented on Reddit, with 8 percent saying they use the site.
