Revealed: How to Get Twitter to Verify Your Account

In this video, comedians Hari and  Ashok Kondabolu talk to entrepreneur Anil Dash about the “fair and not at all capricious” three-step process for getting your account verified on Twitter.

Dash explained how he got his @anildash handle verified on stage during the Untitled Kondabolu Brothers Project on March 15 at the People’s Improv Theater in NYC.

Sadly, you can’t ask Twitter to verify your account, he said, and the vetting process appears to have nothing to do with actually verifying your identity. Twitter will simply send you a direct message from the @verified handle notifying you that you are three steps away from verification.

Once you get the message, you’ll have to complete these three steps:

Step 1:

The administrators will test your knowledge of how to use the platform correctly with a series of multiple choice questions.

For example, the tweet that will double your rate of new followers for the day is the one that looks like it was tweeted live, because according to Twitter, live-tweeting from an event can increase your daily follower rate by 260 percent.

Step 2:

Increase your trustworthiness by following other Verified Users. If you need help with this one, our sibling blog AllTwitter keeps a running tally of recently verified accounts.

Step 3:

Submit your phone number. (Tip: Dash said he skipped this part and still got verified.)

Our advice? Start working on steps one and two now. It couldn’t hurt.
