Russian Children May Be A Growing App Demographic

Parents of young children in Russia are introducing their kids to digital media, according to a new report from Anketki Research called Digital Parenting Russia. The report says that by 2014, Internet penetration in Russian is expected to reach 70 percent of the population and the children’s products market is expected to grow by 30 percent. With 30 million children in Russia, this is a potential market for app developers and eBook makers to be aware of.

According to the report, almost 90 percent of children use cell phones and 80 percent use desktop computers on a regular basis. In addition, 14 percent of sixteen-to-eighteen year olds in Russia own a tablet.

Like their Western counterparts, 65 percent of Russian parents use digital media to distract their kids while they are trying to get things done. Russian fathers are more likely than Russian mothers to use digital media including eBooks, mobile apps and online games. Nine percent of fathers think that using mobile apps is a positive activity for their kids and eight percent of them thing that eBooks are a positive thing. On the other hand, fourteen percent of mothers think that spoken words audio games are positive for kids. Four percent of mothers think that paper books have a positive impact on a child’s development.
