Hi ThinkMobile readers - all the great mobile apps, devices and reviews are now a part of mediabistro's SocialTimes.com. Thanks for reading!

When I think about web-based services, it is a usually a platform agnostic one. It doesn’t usually matter if we use the web product on a Linux, Mac or Windows based computer. However, the smartphone world seems exactly the opposite in many ways. The pre-App-Store first generation iPhone had web-based apps that were tuned for the iPhone. Nokia’s Web Runtime and Widgets were desgined specifically for the S60. Palm’s webOS web-based apps run only on the Palm Pre. And, Microsoft Gadgets for the upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 runs on, yep, you guessed it Windows Mobile.

Samsung seems to be following a different web-based app strategy though…

Samsung Mobile Innovator Introduces New Widget Site

If you visit…

Samsung Mobile Innovator

…you’ll see that they have SDK’s for Symbian S60, Windows Mobile, and Java-based feature phones.

The Samsung Mobile Widget SDK is based on the Open Source Eclipse platform. So, developers comfortable with Eclipse for other platforms may be able to get comfortable reasonably quickly with Samsung’s widget development platform.
