Paris-based data-intelligence firm Semiocast analyzed 2.8 million tweets sent Feb. 8-10 and found that languages other than English are accounting for a far greater percentage of them than in 2009.
English-language tweets slipped to 50 percent from two-thirds of messages sent via the microblogging service in the first half of 2009. The next four languages on the list were Japanese (14 percent), Portuguese (9 percent), Malay (6 percent), and Spanish (4 percent), according to Semiocast.
The remaining 17 percent were made up of the following languages, none of which accounted for a share as high as 2 percent: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Kirghiz, Korean, Macedonian, Nepali, Norwegian, Pashto, Persian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, and Vietnamese.
