As the Election 2012 shenanigans get underway the usual influx of crazy political ads has begun flooding YouTube, but none sillier than the Senatorial campaign for Hank, a 9-year old Maine coon with a heart of gold and a passion for politics.
Hank the Cat’s owners (aka his campaign managers), Matthew O’Leary and Anthony Roberts decided to put Hank in the Virginia Senatorial race because they wanted to “kind of let off some steam” about “the negative and vitriolic” nature of politics, according to NPR. They’ve created a website for Hank and he’s also on Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and on YouTube, where his two campaign videos have already racked up over 170,000 views.
But just like in the real world of cutthroat politics, Hank’s campaign went to the dogs real fast—this time, literally. A video called ‘Hank for Senate? No Way’ paid for by “Canines for a Feline Free Tomorrow” has reared its little wet doggy nose on YouTube, racking up over 104,000 views so far. In the video, the Canines call out Hank on never having released his birth certificate or tax returns and never responding to allegations that he used catnip.
The Huffington Post caught up with campaign manager Matthew O’Leary who told them that, “Hank has expressed concern that politicians ask for Americans’ hard-earned money and then spend it on ads that continue this vicious, hateful cycle.”
