One of the first class of apps available for smartphones was shopping apps like ShopSavvy, which help you find the best prices of items, either by scanning their bar code or searching on the item’s name. You can buy items on your phone using apps from Amazon and Best Buy, and you can get discounts and rewards using shopkick or Groupon. A company called Modiv Media has created an app called Scan It! that speeds up the store checkout process.

As you select items to buy from store shelves, you scan the barcode of the item using the Scan It! app on an iPhone. If a coupon or other offer is available for that item, you will see a notification about it right on your phone. When you are done, you can then check out and pay for your items right on your phone. I assume that stores that use Scan It! will require you to present your “virtual receipt” for review and inspection before you can leave, just as most warehouse stores like Costco do today. As someone who prefers the self check-out aisle at grocery stores, I like the idea of being able to speed up the process further by using my smartphone to scan in and eventually pay for the items.
