SonicMule, or Smule as it prefers to be known, has closed a $3.9 million funding round led by Granite Ventures.

The start-up, which develops interactive sonic apps for the iPhone, plans to use this latest infusion to “enhance its position as a leading developer of innovative applications and services for mobile users.”

Smule is the company behind the Sonic Lighter, which has topped the list of paid apps in 10 iTunes App Stores around the world, and the entertaining Ocarina, which has been the number-one paid app in over 40 markets.

Bessemer Venture Partners, the lead investor in Smule’s first round, also contributed this time around along with Maple Investments and Smule co-founder and CEO Jeffrey Smith. Chris Hollenbeck, managing director at Granite, has joined Smule’s board as a result of the investment.
