A History Of Social Commerce: Important Dates [Infographic]

Today more brands than ever are engaging fans and selling products on Facebook.  Social commerce is booming.  But how did we get to this point?  A fun infographic from Useful Social Media outlines a history of social commerce, starting with the first virtual gifts sold on Facebook back in February 2007 and ending with some interesting facts about social commerce today.

Some of the highlights of ‘Social Commerce Important Dates’ include the fact that in December 2008, Dell claimed $1 million USD in revenue via Twitter sales alerts; in July 2009, $34 was spent on Facebook’s first retail transaction via 1800-FLOWERS; and in August of 2010 Groupon became the fastest growing company of all time and Mark Zuckerberg said, “If I had to guess, social commerce is next to blow up.”

Looks like Zuckerberg was right.  Over the past year we’ve seen the introduction of the first social shopping mall via Facebook, Facebook users can now rent movies through the site, and Media Economist Jack Meyers predicted that 50% of digital market growth will come from social commerce.

When you take a look at all the important dates in social commerce over the past few years you can’t ignore the fact that the industry is on the rise.  More and more brands are engaging their customers and selling their products via social media.  Are you?  Check out the infographic below and let us know what you think.  Have you jumped on the social commerce bandwagon yet?
