Infographic Explores The Social Evolution Of Gaming

A decade ago there was somewhere between 150 to 250 million gamers.  Today that number has jumped to between 1 to 1.2 billion gamers.  A lot of this growth has to do with the growth of gaming on mobile devices and in social networks.  A new infographic from Facebook video chat app Rounds and Column Five Media explores this phenomenon—the evolution of social gaming.

The infographic points out the fact that gaming has seen huge growth as we have evolved from the anti-social, single-player home game consoles to multi-player home games to social multi-player online games like DOOM and (much later) WoW.  Today gaming has become even more social with Facebook apps and games.

Rounds explores the reasons why social gaming has become so popular, pointing particularly to the facts that social games are super accessible, as well as the fact that social networks offer users a huge network of friends that they can easily play games with.  Today 26 million users play social games on mobile devices, 100 million play games on social networks, and this number is only growing.  By 2012, 148 million households are expected to be playing console-based online games.
