Social Media Is The Killer App For Smartphones

A Gigaom article reports on a survey that shows traffic on mobile broadband networks associated with Twitter and Facebook has increased dramatically in the last year. I don’t find the results too surprising as I have noticed that the majority of my Facebook friends update their statuses from smartphones. Short status updates on Facebook, not to mention the 140 character limit of Twitter, are ideal for entry on a smartphone and with a smartphone always nearby its easy to quickly check on either services whenever there is a few minutes of free time.

I think the data also supports why Twitter and Facebook are putting so much energy into mobile apps. As you know, Twitter now has their own mobile app for Android and iOS phones, and of course last week there was much discussion about whether Facebook is planning on making their own smartphone. I still don’t see Facebook actually making their own phone, but I fully expect deeper Facebook integration with Android.
