Apple Announces Black Friday Sale (Mashable)
Black Friday is traditionally the only day of the year that Apple offers discounts on its products. While the discounts are small — usually 10 to 15 percent — that can still add up to $100 off a MacBook Air or up to $60 off an iPad. TabTimes Amazon has perhaps been the most aggressive with Black Friday, promising week-long deals on over 1,000 products from Windows 8 and Google Chromebooks to 3D TVs and the company’s own Kindle Fire tablets. No details are known at this stage on what that deal will entail, although a variety of U.S. retailers are preparing to offer gift cards of up to $30 when customers purchase one of the Kindle Fire tablets. PC World The Microsoft Store will start Black Friday earlier than most retailers by kicking off its sales extravaganza online on Thanksgiving Day starting at 12 a.m. Pacific time. It’s not clear if there will be a difference between the sales online on Thursday and those at Microsoft Store locations on Friday morning. Boston Herald Once you’re at the store, use a mobile shopping app to scan the barcode of the product you want to buy. Try either RedLaser or ShopSavvy. Make sure your price is really the lowest by using Amazon Price Check as well. Chicago Sun-Times Technology will play an increasingly important role, both among shoppers comparing store price tags with online prices on their mobile devices, and as salespeople armed with iPads help shoppers avoid lines by swiping their mobile devices or payment systems to make a quick exit. The National Retail Federation’s survey shows more shoppers than ever will use smartphones to compare prices.

Pinterest Courts Businesses and Celebs with Holiday-Themed Boards (GigaOM)
Coming off its announcement that it will begin to specifically court businesses on its platform, Pinterest revealed Tuesday that it will work with a variety of celebrities and brands to promote “30 Days of Pinspiration,” a holiday-themed set of boards beginning with a Thanksgiving-themed board from Katie Couric. The calendar will later feature the NBA, Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day, Paula Deen, the U.S. Marine Corps and Starbucks. CNET “Every year for Thanksgiving, Katie and her family put together a great spread to celebrate their time together and give thanks,” according to the Pinterest blog. “Katie’s taken this opportunity to share her holiday favorites from years past as well as some fresh ideas for her upcoming feast.” AdAge The calendar will live at holidays.pinterest.com and be promoted within Pinterest, on its blog and on its Facebook and Twitter feeds. The campaign was developed in-house, though the company doesn’t yet have a formal marketing department.

Twitter Offers $1 Million in Advertising Credits For Small Business Saturday (Mashable)
Twitter is offering as much as $1 million in free ad credits to 10,000 businesses to support Small Business Saturday this weekend. Twitter announced Tuesday that it will give away $100 in free credits to each of the first 10,000 businesses who apply and are eligible for the program in an effort to help these businesses promote their brands on the social network.

Facebook appears to be testing yet another new module in its news feed, this time aggregating the most shared content from social reader applications such as that of The Washington Post. Some Facebook users are seeing the module in their news feeds, which lists the most shared stories from social reader apps.

Is Twitter Breaking the Law by Letting Hamas Tweet? (The Daily Dot)
Much has been made of the tweets between Hamas and Israel as the current Gaza conflict plays out, but is Twitter breaking the law by giving Hamas a platform? “This is a difficult and modern question and gets to the heart of interpreting what ‘material support’ means under the statute in a modern media environment,” Roy S. Gutterman, director of the Tully Center for Free Speech and associate professor at S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, told The Daily Dot.

Leahy Scuttles His Warrantless Email Surveillance Bill (CNET)
Sen. Patrick Leahy has abandoned his controversial proposal that would grant government agencies more surveillance power — including warrantless access to Americans’ email accounts — than they possess under current law. The Vermont Democrat said Tuesday on Twitter that he would “not support such an exception” for warrantless access.

Foursquare Pushes Further into Local Commerce with Update, Business Guide (SocialTimes)
Foursquare has bulked up the guide for small businesses it offers on its website, and in an update to its iPhone app on Tuesday, will now allow users looking of nearby businesses to identify “Recently Opened” venues. The “Recently Opened” filter under the Explore tab will help users in cities such as San Francisco that are being transformed by the tech industry to keep up with all of the new businesses opening.

Zynga Appoints Tim LeTourneau as Chief Creative Officer (AllThingsD)
AllThingsD has learned Zynga has promoted Tim LeTourneau to the position of chief creative Officer, replacing Mike Verdu, who left the company in August to start his own game company. As part of his new role, he’ll be stepping away from the day-to-day job operations of FarmVille 2 to spend more time on game design across the board.

Do Promoted Tweets Work? This Study Says Yes (AllTwitter)
The big question for retailers wanting to get the most out of Twitter is this: Do promoted products “work?” According to a study by Compete, Twitter users who were exposed to retailer tweets visit those retailer websites at a higher rate (95 percent) than general Internet users (90 percent).
