Facebook to Follow Other Social Nets by Using Hashtags (SocialTimes)
Facebook is bringing hashtags to its social networking service, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The symbol (#) used for grouping social media posts by topic has long been in use by other networks including Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, Google+, and to some extent, Pinterest. The Wall Street Journal Facebook is testing whether to follow Twitter’s lead and allow users to click on a hashtag to pull up all posts about similar topics or events so it can quickly index conversations around trending topics and build those conversations up, giving users more reason to stay logged in and see more ads. Facebook’s work on a hashtag is a sign of the heightening battle between Facebook and Twitter, as both compete for mobile users and fight for advertising dollars. Advertising Age There are obvious implications for ad targeting, since Facebook will theoretically now have a much better signal to identify highly engaged TV viewers watching a real-time event like the Oscars or the NBA Finals if hashtags are widely adopted. However, it’s also possible that Facebook’s foray into hashtags has much more to do with data and building out its graph search product than with ads (for now). LostRemote Twitter has been fanning the flames for years by aggressively showcasing how many people use the platform during big TV events. However, Facebook’s predominately private platform has made it difficult to take credit for social TV conversations happening behind the scenes. TechCrunch Facebook has seen the power of the hashtag firsthand; it’s a wildly popular behavior on Instagram. With a completely different demographic hashtagging their photos, Facebook is able to see how much extra engagement and traction is stirred up for photos based on bored users tapping the highlighted words.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Announced: 5-Inch 441 ppi Screen, 13 MP Camera, Android 4.2, 4G LTE, Available in April (The Next Web)
Thursday at its Galaxy S event in New York Samsung officially announced the much-teased Galaxy S 4, featuring 4G LTE support, a 5-inch 441ppi screen, a 7.9mm-thick body, a 13 MP camera and dual-camera recording. The device weighs in at 130 grams and also packs new sensors, including infrared gesture, temperature and humidity. No price was shared.

Facebook Expands Reach Reporting in Page Admin Panel (AllFacebook)
Facebook has been trying to be more accurate about organic and paid reach. Last month, the social network fixed a bug that made reported reach lower than reality. Now, the site has made it easier for page administrators to find out how well their posts have been doing in terms of organic and paid reach by putting these figures at the top of the page admin panel.

Nimbuzz Hits 150M Emerging Market Users, Puts the Heat on Facebook in Asia (TechCrunch)
Nimbuzz has announced that it has passed 150 million users globally and is doubling its users year on year. Indeed, the growth is such that AC Nielsen now thinks Nimbuzz is putting the heat on Facebook in Asia and especially in India, according to the latest Nielsen India Rankings.

Reuters Social Media Editor Matthew Keys Indicted for Aiding Anonymous (FishbowlLA)
Matthew Keys, a social media editor at Reuters and a former employee of the Tribune Company-owned Fox affiliate KTXL in Sacramento, has been charged by the feds with helping Anonymous hack into the Tribune Company website in late 2010. More specifically, they are charging Keys with giving away log-in keys to the Tribune website in an online chat room.

Woman Slapped with Battery Charge After Tweeting About Shoe Attack (The Daily Dot)
A woman in Fort Pierce, Fla., was arrested after bragging about a high-heel shoe attack on Twitter. Decardra L. “Cardie” Russell was charged with aggravated battery Monday, according to TCPalm.com, after allegedly beating another woman with footwear.

Facebook Snags Talent from Design Firm Hot Studio (AllThingsD)
Facebook announced Thursday it has made a talent deal, bringing in a number of designers from the San Francisco-based design firm Hot Studio. The “acqhire” brings over an undisclosed number of the team, and Facebook did not share the financial terms of the deal.
