Google Appears to Be Testing a Stunning Gmail Overhaul That Puts the Focus Solely on Email (The Next Web)
Google is constantly testing new designs and features, but Geek recently spotted a beautiful new visual overhaul of Gmail’s web interface. The leaked images show a radically simpler inbox with less clutter and a big focus on email itself. ars technica The leaked images of the Gmail UI being tested by the Mountain View, Calif.-based media giant resemble leaks of the mobile Gmail UI. Aspects like marking important messages with stars appear to be on its way out, and this feature is being replaced with pins. The Verge Most notably, the unwieldy sidebar has been replaced with a slide-in pane. Buttons like “compose” have been moved to the bottom right corner, and it looks like there’s another new feature down there: reminders. Geek Google’s fly-in menu system on the left removes the crazy tab system that was bolted into Gmail last year and places it in line with everything else, with a similarly collapsible Hangouts interface on the opposite side of the screen. This setup lets you open everything up if you’re a fan of using the whole display for your email, but it also supports shrinking the window down so you can glance at your Inbox whenever you need it. Business Insider It’s worth noting that Google is always testing new stuff for its products, and just because screenshots like these leak out, doesn’t mean the changes are coming any time soon, or even at all. Google typically changes Gmail slowly, so it’s unlikely this change will come all at once.
