Turkish Government Blocks YouTube After Court Overturns Twitter Ban (SocialTimes)
Turkish authorities have blocked YouTube just one day after a court ruled that the government could not block Twitter. The ban comes in response to a leaked recording of a security meeting that was posted to YouTube. The Wall Street Journal The recording, published anonymously on the platform, purported to reveal a conversation in which Turkey’s foreign minister, spy chief and a top general appear to discuss how to create a pretext for a possible Turkish attack within Syria. One of two recordings, listened to more than 140,000 times apiece, appeared to show a voice identified as Hakan Fidan, head of the National Intelligence Organization, appearing to suggest a missile assault as justification for such an incursion. Reuters The foreign ministry said the recording was of a crisis management meeting to discuss threats stemming from clashes in Syria and that elements of the recording had been manipulated. The leakers would face heavy punishment, it said. The New York Times / The Lede Although the authenticity of the leaked audio about Turkey’s planned response to this threat remains in dispute, Ilhan Tanir, Washington correspondent for the Turkish daily Vatan, noted that links to the transcript, and an English translation of the audio, had been posted on other sites, including Dropbox. Despite the spread of information online, the government also moved to ban reporting on the leaked audio by news organizations in Turkey, Emre Peker of The Wall Street Journal said. BBC News As conflicting reports emerged over the blockage, Google, which owns YouTube, confirmed that some users were unable to access YouTube in Turkey.
