The Syrian Electronic Army claimed hack attacks on The New York Times and Twitter, using its own Twitter account to taunt both sites. According to ars technica, the Times attack is one in a series of escalating attacks against American media. The New York Times The New York Times website was unavailable to readers on Tuesday afternoon after an online attack on the company’s domain name registrar, Melbourne IT. The attack also forced employees of The Times to take care in sending emails. AllThingsD Eileen Murphy, vice president of corporate communications for The Times, said via Twitter that the service problems appeared to be the result of a “malicious external attack.” Shares of The New York Times Co. fell by nearly 1 percent to $11.48 in after-hours trading, following Murphy’s tweet.
