VineTwitter Says Vine App Has 40 Million Users (GigaOM)
Vine, which was acquired by Twitter almost a year ago, has hit 40 million users. The company announced this milestone via a tweet Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal/Digits Reaching 40 million users is impressive for a seven-month-old app, but a couple of caveats: First, the number of registered users isn’t necessarily a sign of sustained engagement. Anyone can sign up for an app once and never use it again. Second, Vine has a long way to go to reach engagement levels seen by Facebook’s Instagram, a popular photo-sharing app that moved into Vine’s video territory a couple of months ago. AllThingsD To be fair, it has been less than three months since Vine announced 13 million registered accounts on June 4, so any monthly active user number may not be drastically different from a registered accounts number. But who knows how many folks dropped off the platform since its January launch, or especially since Instagram launched its video feature on June 20? The Verge Looking at Topsy Tuesday, we see that Instagram is still racking up about six times as many tweets per day as Vine, although there are a lot of factors at play: Instagram offers photo sharing as well as video, and neither figure counts the number of shares that don’t make it outside their respective social network. Mashable In related Twitter news, a hacker allegedly leaked the login information of 15,000 Twitter accounts Tuesday, but not by obtaining the passwords. Instead, the hacker reportedly accessed the tokens from third-party accounts. Immediately, Twitter and media outlets encouraged users to head to their Twitter accounts and lock down security.

Pandora-Like iTunes Radio to Launch in September with Ads Every 15 Minutes (VentureBeat)
Apple introduced iTunes Radio to the masses back in June, but the world will finally be able to use it in just a few weeks. AdAge reports that iTunes Radio will launch in September with a handful of big-name advertisers on hand, including McDonald’s, Nissan and Pepsi. AdAge The deals range from the high single-digit millions of dollars to tens of millions of dollars and include a 12-month advertising campaign to run within the streaming music service for each of the participating brands. In addition to basking in all the publicity that comes with a heavily-anticipated Apple product launch, the launch partners get exclusivity within their respective industries through the end of 2013. Billboard There are a couple reasons why Apple can demand high minimum buys from advertisers for iTunes Radio. First, Pandora, iHeartRadio and other Internet radio services have already confirmed the viability of the format. Second, Apple can offer a range of ad types — audio, video and “slate” ads that appear in front of any app or web browser — that improve on the common display ad.

Facebook Leads an Effort to Lower Barriers to Internet Access (The New York Times)
Today, Facebook plans to announce an effort aimed at drastically cutting the cost of delivering basic Internet services on mobile phones, particularly in developing countries, where Facebook and other tech companies need to find new users. Half a dozen of the world’s tech giants, including Samsung, Nokia, Qualcomm and Ericsson, have agreed to work with the company as partners on the initiative, which they call Internet.org.

Google Updates Play Services with Improved GPS, Google+ and Photo Sphere Integrations (TechCrunch)
Google Play Services, the company’s client-side library for allowing Android developers to easily use Google-powered features like Maps and Google+ in their apps, got a major update Tuesday that includes a number of interesting new features. Many of these, Google notes, are meant to provide greater power savings, but the company says it has also made a number of performance improvements.

New Facebook SDK for Android Adds Share Dialog, Object API Support, Improved Login UI (AllFacebook)
Facebook released another updated software development kit, this time for the Android platform, and improvements include the addition of share dialog, support for the object application-programming interface and an improved login user interface, all of which had previous been introduced for iOS, and all of which are aimed at allowing developers to more easily implement Open Graph into their applications. The social network pointed out in a post on its developer blog that 73 of the 100 top-grossing Android apps are integrated with Facebook.
