WorldCup2 Facebook and Twitter Launch Hubs for Tracking World Cup (The Verge)
Twitter and Facebook know that hordes of soccer fans will head online to talk about the World Cup this week, and both social networks want to be home to the conversation. They’re each rolling out hubs and features dedicated to the World Cup, giving fans easy ways to follow along and show that they’re watching. AllFacebook Facebook said in a Newsroom post that Trending World Cup can be accessed via the URL www.facebook.com/worldcup or by clicking on World Cup in its Trending section, located on the right-hand side of News Feed. Or if users’ friends are watching specific matches, clicking on their posts will bring up Trending World Cup. The Wall Street Journal You can also now tweet to include a country’s flag, a feature called “hashflags” that was in use during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Pop star Shakira showed the feature off in what appears to be a coordinated launch for the product. Twitter will use these mentions in its “World Cup of Tweets,” which will go live on Thursday. Quartz Anyone signing up for Twitter during the World Cup will be asked whether they are interested in the matches, and if so, prompted to choose a team to support. Then, in a single step, they will be encouraged to follow popular Twitter accounts related to that team. NBC News Social media activity during big sporting events such as the Olympics and the Super Bowl has soared in recent years and should continue as user numbers grow. In 2010, when the last World Cup took place in South Africa, Facebook had just 500 million users.
