Watch: Socialnomics’ Social Media Revolution Gets Updated For 2011

Back in the summer of 2009 Erik Qualman, author of Socialnomics, introduced the inaugural version of ‘Social Media Revolution’, an infographic video packed with surprising statistics about social media.  Social Media Revolution was a huge hit and was revisited last Spring with new and improved statistics.  This month, Qualman released the second update of his now infamous video—Social Media Revolution 3.  This time, the evolution of social media is exposed—social media is no longer about technology.  It’s about people.

In 2011, 1 in 5 couples meet online, 1 in 5 divorces are blamed on Facebook, and kindergarteners are learning on iPads.  If Facebook were a country, it’d be the world’s 3rd largest, and Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Britney Spears have more Twitter followers than the entire populations of Sweden, Israel, Greece, Chile, North Korea, and Australia.

The updated Socialnomics’ Social Media Revolution video covers everything from the VW Darth Vader ad from this year’s Super Bowl, which racked up a whopping 40 million YouTubeviews (37M according to the video), to the fact that a Ford Explorer launch on Facebook generated more traffic than a Super Bowl ad.  Email is on the way out, more and more parents are friending their children and Farmville is…well…huge!

Some of the statistics in the video are a little outdated—for instance, they claim that 24 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube each minute, and YouTube recently announced that that number has doubled to a whopping 48 hours of video per minute (note: This stat is cut from the short version of the updated video).  That being said, it’s still chock full of some pretty interesting factoids and it makes you step back and think about just how big social media has become.  Check out the long version below and let us know what you think.  You can also click here to see the short version of Social Media Revolution 3.  Were you surprised by any of the stats in this video?
