SocialGuide & Tribune Partner Up To Revolutionize Social TV [Interview]

Earlier this week New York-based social TV company SocialGuide announced that it has entered into an agreement with Tribune Media Services (TMS), a leader in the field of entertainment information databases.  I had the opportunity to ask Sean Casey, the CEO of SocialGuide, about what this partnership means for the future of the social TV service, as well as how SocialGuide differs from other social television services.  Read on to find out what he had to say.

One thing I was curious about is how SocialGuide differs from other social TV apps like GetGlue, Miso and Philo.  According to a press release about the partnership with TMS, SocialGuide is “the first real-time social guide for TV and social TV platform that makes every show across every network instantly social.”  I asked Sean to elaborate on how SocialGuide is different from similar services that allow users to browse and check-in to television shows, movies and more.  Here’s what he had to say:

“SocialGuide is focused on a social TV experience that goes beyond check in.  We capture the relevant social TV discussions that are happening naturally across Twitter and Facebook as TV airs.  At SocialGuide, TV fans can see what everyone, including their friends and the stars are saying as they watch their favorite programs.

“Today, SocialGuide monitors the social discussions happening around every program aired by more than 160 of the most popular TV channels and networks.  In addition, SocialGuide provides users with the first real-time, social programming guide (our “SPG” or SocialGuide) that is a smarter, more social way to discover and watch TV—a novel alternative or replacement to their cable guides.  Our SPG instantly tells people what the most social trending shows are on their TV sets right now and provides members with the programs’ localized channel numbers so they can find something great to watch fast.”

So what does the partnership with TMS mean for the future of SocialGuide?  Sean tells me, “TMS’ data is used to drive the SocialGuide and our more conventional “What’s On” guides.  We look forward to continuing to extend the TMS TV data and meta offerings into the social web to create compelling social TV products.”

SocialGuide is a pretty cool service, if you ask me.  It’s a quick and easy way to find out what television shows are trending right now and find out what people are saying about them and where you can watch them.  It’s like a social version of TV Guide that ranks shows by popularity.  And the addition of TMS data will only serve to make it even better.  Check out the service at SocialGuide.com and let us know what you think in the comments!
