socwall_logo.gifWell what do you know? Even desktop wallpapers or backgrounds are joining the web 2.0/social network phenomenon. Socwall or social wallpapering aims to classify rank and distribute high-resolution images for use as desktop backgrounds.

socwall_sample_wallpaper.jpgSocwall came about due to the popularity of web 2.0 websites, and the influence of famous social bookmarking site, Digg to Socwall founder Kirk Ouimet. The idea was to display various high-resolution desktop wallpapers on the Socwall site so that practically anybody can rate the wallpapers. Visitors who rate as much wallpapers as they can will be recommended by Socwall with more intelligent wallpapers.

Sounds fun, eh? But wait, not all wallpapers gets to be featured in Socwall. The site requires a validation test before wallpapers are uploaded. Upon uploading, Socwall will automatically scans the wallpaper and determine whether it passes the following criteria:

  • Valid file type (i.e. jpg, jpeg, gif, bmp)
  • Does not already exist in the database
  • File size under 3000 KB
  • Resolution at least 1280×720

And since Socwall is practically open to anyone (including spammers I suppose), all desktop wallpapers must be “safe for work” and are not vulgar, immoral, inappropriate, suggestive or pornographic in any way.

Ready to submit your masterpiece desktop wallpapers? Go ahead, Socwall is free for anyone and requires no registration as of yet.
