Someone Paid $461,000 for Gold Earbuds Designed by Apple’s Jony Ive

gold earbudsApple’s Jony Ive and Marc Newsome along with Bono managed to raise nearly $13 million in curated and designed goods at the 2013 Red Auction – a benefit event for the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

Among the items sold was this nearly tawdry Rose Gold Earbud earphones that sold for $461K - way over its estimated value of $20K-$50K. The highest priced item was a special desk made of anodised aluminum which sold for $1,685,000 and a Red Mac Pro for $977,000.

Apple’s involvement in Charitable donations have been increasing since 2011 when the company was being renowned as the ‘stingiest’ corporation, even when compared to Wal-Mart. Since taking over as Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook has reversed Steve Job’s attitude about charitable donations – the company began with $100 million in cash donations in 2012. Compare that to Walmart who managed to give $342 million last year. Walmart was valued at $245,002 while Apple is valued at $632,562. Of course, neither of these comapnies’ donared come anywhere near Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway who gave $1.5 billion from its $210,558 millions.
