Here comes the airplane. Today the tight-lipped Spanfeller Media Group announced that its new food site will be called The Daily Meal and that it will launch on October 15th. The website is the first in a series of properties headed by former Forbes.com CEO Jim Spanfeller, who is now CEO of Spanfeller Media Group. Spanfeller brings along Valaer Murray, the former managing editor of Forbes Traveler who will now manage The Daily Meal. Joining Murray is editorial director Colman Andrews, the Gourmet columnist and cookbook author who co-founded the food magazine Saveur in 1994.
Said Andrews:
I’ve been approached by countless food websites, real and imagined, but The Daily Meal is the first one that really has all its ducks – and scallops and apples and tomatoes – in a row. I look forward to sharing my experience, and whatever I’ve learned about eating and drinking over the years, in this vibrant, professionally planned and executed contemporary context.
Said Spanfeller:
We’ve cherry-picked the best talent in the field to ensure that consumers get the best advice for their palette, whether they are dining in San Francisco or preparing a meal for friends in Maine. Early in his career, Colman helped define food media on the print landscape, and I have no doubt he will have the same impact in the digital space. Under his leadership, The Daily Meal will blend eating in and dining out in a single destination for all things food.
I had the great pleasure to work with Valaer at ForbesTraveler where she did an outstanding job. We will continue to build our talent pool to attract the most knowledgeable and experienced professionals in content creation. With its singular focus and attention to the editorial team, The Daily Meal will serve as a model for upcoming SMG launches.
Last month Spanfeller told mbStartups that the publication will be a community forum with a wide variety of recipes, cooking demonstration videos and localized restaurant reviews, as well as articles on food news, entertaining at home and food-related travel. The site didn’t have a splash page at the time of the announcement, but the content will appear on the URL thedailymeal.com.
