Speculation: iPhone 5 to Have Dual-Mode CDMA/GSM Support. Fact: Verizon iPhone 4 Has a Dual-mode Chipset Today

TechCrunch reports with some fanfare that the rumored iPhone 5 expected to be available sometime this year will work with both CDMA voice networks (Sprint and Verizon) and GSM (AT&T, T-Mobile and most of the rest of the world).

In some respects, however, it would be more surprising if the successor to the iPhone 4 did NOT work with both network types (CDMA and GSM). Why? iFixit tore apart the CDMA iPhone 4 sold by Verizon and found that this current generation phone has a Qualcomm MDM6600 chipset that is capable of providing dualmode capability although the Verizon iPhone 4 does not have GSM support enabled. iFixit noted that this same chipset is used in the Droid Pro that Verizon sells as a “world phone” that can be used outside of the U.S.
