Speed Up Search With DuckDuckGo

DuckDuckGo is a fast search engine that has a new Android app. DuckDuckGo speeds up the process of providing information that you are looking for by providing a snippet of information at the top of the page, before the search results, in what they call “zero-click info.”

In my testing I did not have a high percentage of my searches answered in the zero-click info. However, the search results also display several sentences and most often what I am looking for was displayed on the first search page, which means I didn’t have to click through to the web site in the search results. I did find that one word search terms provided a higher quantity of zero-click info than searches on sentences.

DuckDuckGo’s search engine has several factors going for it in addition to how information is presented. It does not track users, and they focus on removing “useless” sites that clutter search results. Another nice feature is the ability to narrow a search to specific sites like amazon by preceding the search with an exclamation point (!) and the sites name. For example to search YouTube you enter !youtube or !yt and then the search term.

With Google and Microsoft pretty much dominating the search market, it’s nice to see others trying to break into the market with innovation. The approach that DuckDuckGo takes by providing more information in the search results works well for mobile, where you don’t want to spend a lot of time taping through search results to find the information you seek. If you aren’t happy with the Google or Bing search apps in Android, give DuckDuckGo a try.
