Last year, Casey Pugh launched Star Wars Uncut, inviting Star Wars fans and filmmakers to take part in a massive project to remake Star Wars IV: A New Hope. The film was divvied up into 15-second clips, and participants submitted their own 15-second remakes, resulting in an entirely crowdsourced version of the original Star Wars flick. Now, after months and months of hard work, Star Wars Uncut has finally made its debut online, and it’s a sight to behold.
The fact that the movie was divided up into short, 15-second segments makes it a real work of art. The different segments range from live action video to Machinima, Lego, stop motion, Flash animation, puppets and more. NewTeeVee has the opportunity to talk with creator Pugh last January, and he told them that this diversity was part of the reason that LucasFilm was supportive of the project. They liked it because he “treated it like an art project”.
And an art project it is – the sheer quality and creativity behind some of the clips is absolutely mind-blowing. And this creativity isn’t going unnoticed. Star Wars Uncut was nominated for an Emmy n Creative Achievement in Interactive Fiction and is bound to be nominated for many more awards.
The Star Wars Uncut website says, “We have a fully edited version of the movie produced, but we are working through the legal issues in order to bring that to everyone as soon as possible.” In the meantime, you can check out the full version here, where Pugh has strung together the top-rated 15-second clips. Check out a teaser for the project below and let us know what you think. What other films would you like to see remade in this fashion?
