Stop motion has become one of the most popular forms of animation in the commercial world. It is showing up more and more in television commercials, such as the ad campaigns for the Amazon Kindle and Target, and in music videos like Coldplay’s Strawberry Swing. Over the past couple of years stop motion has become more and more popular on the web as well, with stop motion videos racking up thousands and even millions of views on sites like YouTube and Vimeo.
Personally, I am obsessed with stop motion animation and am quite excited to bring you this compilation of some of the most viral stop motion clips from the last couple of years.
Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie
This music video, which was shot in 2096 frames, is really the video that got the ball rolling for stop motion in the world of commercials and music videos. There have been many style-copycats since, but when this video was released it was really one-of-a-kind and special. It has had nearly 12 million YouTube views in just over a year.
Guitar: Impossible
MysteryGuitarMan is one of the top most subscribed to users on YouTube and his creativity always shines through. He does a lot of work with stop motion and camera play. This video is one of his most popular, with over 7 million views, and what I think makes it really unique is that he incorporates not only pictures but audio as well into the stop motion effect.
Rymdreglage – 8-bit trip
This music video from Swedish band Rymdreglage comes in third on our list with over 5.5 million YouTube views. This video is truly amazing, with an animation-style that melds perfectly with the band’s music. The clip was created over 1500 hours of moving Lego bricks and photographing them.
Iron Man vs Bruce Lee
Patrick Boivin is a stop motion genius. He scripts, lights, directs, shoots and edits all of his videos. He creates most of his videos using puppets made from action hero toys. Iron Man vs Bruce Lee is one of the most popular, with over 5.4 million YouTube views.
Western Spaghetti by PES
Adam Pesapane, aka PES, is my personal favorite stop motion animator. He has been creating stop motion films for years and is known for creating animated stories using all sorts of random objects. Western Spaghetti has been PES’ largest viral video hit, coming in at over 4.3 million views on YouTube.
DEADLINE Post-It Stop Motion
This video was a huge hit when it was released last year. The pixel-like animation is created entirely out of different colored Post-It notes. This video got an overwhelming response, largely due to the originality of the clip. It has over 3.6 million views on YouTube.
T-SHIRT WAR!!
This video has racked in an astounding 3 million views in just two weeks. The premise is a war between two guys wearing t-shirts, with stop motion animation taking place directly on their shirts. 222 t-shirts were used in the making of this video.
The PEN Story
The PEN Story is made up of a total of 1,800 shots. The creators describe it as a “journey through time”, following a child as he lives life, explores the world and grows old. The video has over 2.3 million views.
Clean It Up
Clean It Up is a very cool video in which graffiti-like lips clean up an old rundown house. The video, which has over 1 million views, was sponsored by Orbit.
Sorry I’m Late
Sorry I’m Late does not have millions of views like these other videos. However, it is one of the most amazing stop motion animations on the web and we wanted to share it with you. Like the Oren Lavie video, this clip was shot with stills from a camera on the ceiling. Pay attention to the time-lapse footage during the credits to see how it was made.
If you have any stop motion animation favorites on the web, please share them with us!
