Amazon Acquires Team Behind Quorus Social Shopping Service

Quorus, a social shopping site that facilitates better conversation between customers, merchants and customers friends, has had its entire team acquired by Amazon. We covered the service a year ago, and chatted with the CEO, and are happy to see the smart team being picked up. It’s not known whether Quorus itself will be utilized at Amazon, or whether the team will be working on something new.

Access Google Calendar On A Kindle Fire

I have found a way to access my Google Calendar information on the Kindle Fire other than by using the web browser. Unfortunately, the solution does require you to spend $9.99 to buy a key to use Exchange By Touchdown beyond 30 days, but you can try out the app for a month free first to see whether you like it.

In a piece titled “How Amazon Is Making A Sucker Out Of Google” writer Mike Elgan suggests that Amazon is taking advantage of Google’s open policy towards Android and in the process could be destroying the Android ecosystem. Google provides Android for free as open source, which allows developers like Amazon to take Google’s work and make it their own. Giving something like Android away seems silly, but I think Google believes users will ultimately find the “Google Experience” more appealing.

K-9 Mail Is A Better Mail App For The Kindle Fire

While Amazon wisely included a mail app on the Kindle Fire, I have been less than satisfied with it. The main problem I have with the Fire’s mail app is that it doesn’t work well with Gmail. Fortunately, I have found a free alternate in the Amazon Appstore called K-9 Mail that I think is better than the mail app that comes with the Fire.

Last week, Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney published a report identifying that Chinese suppliers of Kindle hardware are also in preparations to build an Amazon Kindle Phone. This comes soon after Amazon’s launch of their $200 Kindle Fire device and signals that Amazon is serious about extending their reach to customers to include not just the content they consume, but the hardware upon which they consume it. This is a transformation for the company and signals the potential for a transformation from e-retailer to a full-service content platform similar to Apple. When we first learned about the iPad, it was promoted as a content consumption device. Given the iPad’s on-screen keyboard that can be challenging for typing a lot of words, I can understand the emphasis on content consumption. However, when you turn on an iPad what you see is a grid of icons that don’t translate to content. In contrast, when you turn on the Amazon Kindle Fire content is front and center. Some might say it is the true content consumption device.

It is fairly obvious that the main reason why Amazon is selling the Kindle Fire tablet is to sell more video, music, and books from their store, so it would be understandable if they opted to not make competing content provider apps available for the Fire. Today Amazon showed they resisted that knee-jerk reaction by announcing Netflix, Rhapsody, and Pandora are amongst the thousands of apps that will be available for the Fire when it ships next week.
