If you were to ask me to list a few of the most influential sites on the web right now, there’s no doubt that Reddit would be in the top 5. While the sparse design of the site turns some away, the volume of traffic and quality posts as well as the smart comment sorting make it a hive of useful information and a source of endless humor. As some Redditors’ lovingly refer to the population of the site, the ‘hive mind’ is like an anonymous group of millions of people, expressing their thoughts together.

That said, I’m starting to see companies and brands try to take advantage of the intelligent community, and like they always do, some Facebook developers have jumped on board.

If you ever wondered which of these third party apps (not part of the mobile platform) actually made their way to the start window for each of my devices, wonder no more. I usually leave the default apps in-position on their respective home pages “just because.” This list does not indicate how “important” an app is. It says more about how frequently they are accessed on a daily basis.

I provided a tip here in August that drew a fair bit of attention and commentary. The tip provided a solution to a problem I had to solve myself: How do I share a slide presentation with an audience when a projector is not available? My solution was to upload the slides to SlideShare’s free web sharing service and use a Google QR code to let the audience quickly find and see the presentation. So, how did all this work out?

Journal or diary writing was once a private and somewhat laborious task. Blogging changed the nature of the activity from a private one to a public one and made the process of word smithing faster. Micro-blogging services like Tumblr and Twitter simplified the process further by either limiting the character count or encouraging sharing found content instead of creating new content. Path, Inc.’s app (also named Path) takes this shift away from manual content creation to an automatic process of indicating where you go, what you see and what music you listen to.

As an Android user, I have managed to not have iPhone envy, at least not until Apple announced the iPhone 4S with Siri. Ever since I first heard about Siri I found it desirable, and I was very disappointed when Apple bought the company, sealing its fate of only ever being available for the iPhone. Still, while I think Siri is very nice, it’s not enough to make me switch to the iPhone, therefore I have been on the hunt for an equivalent for Android.

In a piece titled “How Amazon Is Making A Sucker Out Of Google” writer Mike Elgan suggests that Amazon is taking advantage of Google’s open policy towards Android and in the process could be destroying the Android ecosystem. Google provides Android for free as open source, which allows developers like Amazon to take Google’s work and make it their own. Giving something like Android away seems silly, but I think Google believes users will ultimately find the “Google Experience” more appealing.
