Facebook’s coming initial public offering has set off a frenzy of anticipation among Main Street and Wall Street investors desperate to get their hands on the stock. Late Monday, the social network raised the price range for its IPO to $34 to $38 a share, from $28 to $35 a share, said a person familiar with the matter, in a sign of investor appetite for the offering. Inside Facebook Facebook has announced a new design for its mobile newsfeed that displays posts in individual boxes similar to how they appear on timeline. As part of the redesign, photos now appear three times larger than before, which could make browsing more efficient since there is less need to tap to see an image full-screen. Yahoo! News/The Lookout Is Facebook a flash in the pan? Nearly half of Americans think so, according to a new AP/CNBC poll. Forty-six percent of those polled said the social networking giant is likely to “fade away as new things come along,” while 43 percent predict it will be “successful over the long term.” CNBC The poll also shows that 57 percent of Facebook users say they never click ads or other sponsored content when they use the site, with another 26 percent saying they hardly ever engage in such activity AllFacebook Recent college graduate Suleika Jaouad found out that when she opened up about having leukemia on Facebook, there was a community ready to embrace her as she faced this new challenge in life.
Chomp Is Gone From Android | Tumblr President Leaves | Rise Of Social Apps

<sbox300x250></sbox300x250>

Apple Kills Chomp for Android (GigaOM)
Apple acquired app discovery service Chomp earlier this year, betting that it would help make app discovery easier and better on its iTunes App Store. The casualty of that acquisition is the Chomp for Android app which seems to have been discontinued. Ars Technica Chomp’s app allows users to search the App Store using a proprietary algorithm to figure out what apps actually do (instead of just using keywords or app names). The app also allows users to see which apps their Facebook or Twitter friends have reviewed, adding a social networking element to the service. MacRumors Apple reportedly paid about $50 million for Chomp, which also had a deal with Verizon to power its Android app search tools. That agreement will presumably be ending as Chomp completes its integration into Apple and focuses all of its attention on iOS. SlashGear Still, beyond the annoyance factor for Android users previously relying on Chomp to ferret out new software, the real interest should come when Apple better integrates the engine into its own store. According to sources speaking when the deal was first revealed, Apple intends to use the technology to dramatically improve the discoverability of new and interesting apps in its increasingly crowded store. continued…

We’re introducing a more functional and flexible version of Google+. I’ve accepted a role as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Andreessen Horowitz. I hope that eventually leads me back to doing what I’ve done for the past three and a half years — namely, building cool things with awesome people with unexpected results. Startup Grind Paul takes a significant amount of time in his post to clarify his role in building the company, perhaps to make sure it’s clear in the history books what he actually did to make Pinterest the huge success it is today. TechCrunch Andreessen Horowitz is one of the leaders among VCs building out the services that they offer to young companies beyond funding. The EIC role will see Sciarra potentially help Andreessen evaluate future investments, offer advice and assistance to its portfolio companies and perhaps even aid Andreessen Horowitz to be more disruptive in its own ventures. SocialTimes Co-founder Ben Silbermann recently gave an interview for a lengthy feature in Fortune magazine. He also sat down for a Q&A with investor and entrepreneur Chris Dixon at the SXSW Interactive conference in Austin, TX. Silbermann has been the sole window to the inner workings of a company that hasn’t done much self-promotion outside the Facebook Timeline. continued…

Nobody Knows Exactly What to Call the “New iPad” — Would Steve Jobs Have Left it Nameless?

The world of news is ablaze with stories of people lining up at Apple stores around the world and getting their hands on the “new iPad”. But isn’t it strange that nobody knows exactly what to call it? ”New iPad”, “iPad HD”, “iPad 3″… the terms are being used interchangeably by everyone who’s up to buy the device. NowI’m sure Tim Cook had his reasons not to call it the iPad 3, but at least give it some moniker akin to the iPhone 4S. It’s a minor naming issue and doesn’t detract from the quality of the device or the raving international success (see video below) that Apple has garnered since it’s announcement (the stock hit $600 for a moment yesterday, up from $500 just a week ago), but it may be the first crack in the new Jobs-less Apple.

Apple Store App EasyPay: Shop in an Apple Store Without Every Dealing with Apple Staff

The speculation last month was that the new Apple Store app would be available last week and introduce a new way to shop in the physical Apple Store. It emerged a few days later than anticipated. But, here it is now. Version 2.0 of the Apple Store (iTunes link) app. The new app goes way beyond letting you see what is available in the online Apple Store.

Apple Store App In-Store Self-Serve Purchase to Start on Thursday?

Apple’s physical retail stores started out with a traditional checkout register format that created long slow lines during peak buying seasons. Then, the stores started using mobile checkout devices based on, ironically, Microsoft Windows CE. More recently, Apple Store staff switched to specially equipped iPod touch units to take payments from anywhere in the store. The next step, according to BGR, starts tomorrow (Thursday), Nov. 3, when anyone with an iPhone (or, presumably an iPod touch or iPad) can order items for in-store pickup using an updated Apple Store app.

Watch: Conan Spoofs Apple’s Siri Commercial

Apple’s AirPlay Mirroring Means iPad Games on Your TV — Will This Affect the Games Industry?

As the lines between console and mobile continue to blur, Apple’s eyes remain fixated on conquering the living room experience. Its introduction of AirPlay Mirroring could be a key blow to console makers like Sony and Microsoft who are still trying to gain traction on the mobile frontier. The plethora of content on Apple’s App Store combined with portable devices could be the reason why Apple will be the first to deliver a seamless gaming experience. continued…

Can Apple Capture User Intent With Siri?

It may be easy to pass Siri off as another voice recognition application but its domain stretches beyond AI algorithms, continual learning and contextually aware systems. The new Siri stands tall as Apple’s flagship feature to its iPhone 4S and for good reasons. More after the jump. continued…

iOS 5 Update for iPad & iPhone is a Fiasco Due to Apple Server Problems

iOS updates for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad are usually slow but steady and predictable events with occassional problems reaching update servers. This, however, is not the case with iOS 5 update today. The first clue was “restore” error message I saw after trying to update my iPhone 4. You can see what this looks like in this Business Insider article.

The world lost a technology pioneer who remained a mover and shaker until the very end this past Wednesday. It seems fitting, then, that my final mobile technology related post of the week is a free app for the iPhone.
