The first prize of $125,000 went to Pixel Punch who developed Paparazzi. The app is described as: An interactive game where the player becomes a virtual paparazzo and sneaks pictures of a vain celebrity before he gets agitated and attacks your camera. You can see Qualcomm’s video of the winning app above. I think ubergizmo’s video below provides a better idea of what the app does.

No Augmented Reality Apps for Windows Phone 7 For Now

One of the biggest attention drawing app categories in 2010 has been Augmented Reality (AR). The best known app is probably Layars available for Android and iPhone. AR apps provide a heads-up camera view of the world overlaid by computer generated information such as text about objects being viewed on the screen. But, it appears that Windows Phone 7 users will have to make do without augmented views of their world.

Sorry, Windows Phone 7 app makers: the camera’s off-limits

Developers, including Layar, reported that they are unable to access the Windows Phone 7 camera control. A quick check in MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) seems to confirm this missing control.

Class Library Reference for Windows Phone

There are objects to encode or decode a JPEG photo image stream in the System.Windows.Media.Imaging extensions class. However, AR developers require access to a camera’s video stream.

I suspect we will see Microsoft provide this kind of access in 2011 when, I hope, we will also see copy/cut/paste and multitasking reappear.

Now You Can Graffiti Your Location Instead of Just Checking In

TagDis, a free iPhone game that came out this summer, allows users to garner Banksy-like fame – at least in the virtual graffiti world. The game uses augmented reality and geo-location technology; users can create their own graffiti in real locations and then the game will superimpose all TagDis graffiti creations on real buildings when users view the world through their iPhone camera.

David Curcurito created a December cover featuring Robert Downey, Jr., seated atop a box with a marker on it. After a download, a consumer can scan that marker in front of a webcam and, much like a barcode at the supermarket, the computer recognizes that data and provides additional content.
