Everybody get’s at least one family update letter near the end of the year and everybody knows at least one person in their life who has a daily blog. Now, the question is which is worse, the family letter or the daily blog.

Whether you run a personal blog, a corporate blog or a mass media outlet (like SocialTimes), you don’t want your site to go down. Thanks to tough years for Twitter and Facebook, we’ve been getting used to unavailable social media platforms, even if we aren’t at all satisfied with it – it’s almost becoming an expectation. That said, nothing is worse than pointing your browser at a spot on the web and not being able to get there … especially if it’s yours.

Should you be afraid? Already, close to 1,600 comments show that Gawker commenters are desperate to date. Fortunately, they seem inclined to stick to each other.

Do your parents or grandparents get frazzled when you try to talk about social media? If your mom is trying to get a grasp on “The Facebook” and your grandpa just can’t comprehend what the heck Twitter is for, then you may want to let them know about WebOver50. #promote. Blogging marked the start of the online revolution and while the industry is still soaring, it’s charting a new course. A new study shows bloggers still want to share their views with the world, but just in 140 characters or less.

We reported earlier on the rise in social networking sites targeted to kids as young as two. Now, give them one more year and they’ll become bloggers.
A recent article in The Independent reports that children as young as three are turning to blogging as a creative and lucrative outlet. New research by Ofcom in the United Kingdom shows that one in five 8-to 11-year olds would like to set up a blog and 15 percent of 12-to 15-year olds are already blogging.

Move over politicians and everyday citizens, YouTube has gone to the stars.
The popular video site known for turning nobodies into money-making machines, will now do the opposite too – bring A-List television stars to the common folk through its newly launched “TV Preview Channel.”

With the book and journalism industries in limbo, more and more writers are turning to the self-publishing world of blogs as an outlet for their creative talents. Since the release of the iPad this year, blog hosts have released apps that make writers’ jobs that much easier. And the intimate setting that comes along with the iPad – being able to curl up with it in the tub, for instance – may mean that lots more people are inspired to take a few moments and record their ideas for all to read. WordPress has released version 1.2 of BuddyPress, which was originally developed to add social media features to sites based on WordPress MU (multiuser). We previously covered BuddyPress back in November of 2007 and had tried to implement the service unsuccessfully on this site.
