Today Zynga co-founder and CEO Mark Pincus appeared on “CBS This Morning” to reassure co-hosts Charlie Rose and Gayle King that after its struggles with disappointing earnings and an overall shift from desktop to mobile, the gaming company and Facebook are “still BFFs,” restoring friendship to Social Media Land and goodwill to investors who were wondering what it all means for them.

Facebook: We’re ‘Very Focused’ on Putting Ads in Newsfeeds (CNET)
Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg and investor Marc Andreessen again made the case for the social networking giant’s opportunity in the mobile market, saying advertising on smartphones and tablets is the company’s primary focus. The two, speaking Tuesday during an interview with Charlie Rose at the Advertising Week conference in New York, dismissed concerns that Facebook is struggling and said it’s making strides in mobile. CNBC The social network is trotting out advertising executives from across the organization to pitch to ad buyers and brands that Facebook ads work. The company is sharing the results of studies, and talking about how it closely targets users, which means potentially better ad results and potential privacy concerns. The New York Times Sandberg played down the company’s falling stock price, saying the ethos of the West Coast meant that the company had already moved on. “While certainly people were disappointed, you know, Silicon Valley companies, we cycle quickly,” she said. “We iterate so quickly, and so we’re pretty good at moving forward. We launch products. Some of them work. We launch the next product.” AllFacebook Facebook recently redesigned its help center in an effort to get answers quicker to the people who need them. The homepage now has six major topics: privacy basics, what’s new, report an issue, timeline, safety and games and apps. Mashable Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview on NBC’s Today set to air on Thursday that he lives a “simple” life and proudly wears the same thing every day. Zuckerberg — who has appeared on GQ and Esquire‘s worst-dressed list in 2011 — confessed in an interview taped last week with Today host Matt Lauer that he owns “maybe about 20″ identical grey T-shirts. Last summer Amazon chief Jeff Bezos told Charlie Rose that people use the Kindle to read and iPads to play video games. Since he made that statement, Barnes & Noble released the Nook Color, the retailer’s color eReader, and it turns out that people are also using the Nook Color to play video games.
In fact, the best selling apps on Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color eReader are predominantly games. From the Barnes & Noble press release: “The top five paid NOOK Apps are Angry Birds, Astraware Mahjong, Quickoffice Pro, Drawing Pad and Aces Jewel Hunt.” Four out of five are games, and not one is a book. Perhaps there is something about a color screen that lends itself to want gaming.
Interestingly, among news of new content releases in its app store, Barnes & Noble also noted that approximately half of Nook apps are $2.99 or less and also that the vast majority are priced at $5.99 or less.
Talking with Charlie Rose last week, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos quipped: “The number one thing people are doing on iPad right now is playing video games … The number one thing people are doing on Kindle is reading books.” Not anymore! The Kindle Store has added two free video games for the eReader.
The first game is entitled Every Word. The simple black-and-white interface is included above. Check it out: “You are given six or seven scrambled letters with the goal of finding as many words as you can. You score points by filling out the words in each empty spot on the board using only the letters that appear at the top of the game board. Keep at it until time runs out or until you fill up the board. The more words you make, the higher your score!”
The other game is entitled Shuffled Row–it seems like solitaire Scrabble on speed. Here’s more: “See how many words you can make from 60 lettered tiles. The tiles are added to your row one at a time so you’ll constantly be working with a new set of letters. After you submit a word, the letters you used will be removed and new ones will be added.” (Via Information Week)
Amazon is sold out of Kindles again. Last week, the retailer sold out of the $189 eReader temporarily and then announced a new $139 eReader. Today, both of the eReaders are temporarily sold out. The only Kindle that is currently available from Amazon is the $379 Kindle DX.
Both eReaders are out of stock for the entire month of August. The website says: “Orders are prioritized on a first come, first served basis. Orders placed today are expected to ship on or before September 4th.”
