Chatroulette has come under fire in recent months as the site has become more and more of a hub for adult entertainment and less and less of the creative, fun meeting place many had hoped it would be. Chatroulette’s recent upgrade to Version 2, after a longer-than-anticipated down time, was disappointing to say the least, as the site didn’t seem to make any significant changes or improvements. Well, hey Chatroulette! There’s a new random chat contender in town called BlurryPeople, and they’re offering users all the features that you should have thought about for Chatroulette V.2.

Well folks, Chatroulette is back after a long week of down time! Those of you who have been patiently (or impatiently) waiting to find out what the new site would bring, you can now sleep sound knowing that the video chat site is back and, if anything, has been downgraded. That’s right, Chatroulette V.2 is basically a streamlined version of the original site that adds nothing new except for a confusing interface and technical difficulties.

Chatroulette has been teasing anxious exhibitionists for days with the empty promise of launching the next version of the site, Experiment #2. On Sunday, the random video chat site went down, hosing a message that said, “The experiment #1 is over now. Thanks for participating. Renewed and updated version of the website will be launched tomorrow.” The next day, the site announced that the new version would be “launched today.” Three days later, Chatrouletters the world over are still on the edge of their seats, many with their pants down, waiting anxiously for the launch.

But is the next step in the revamping of Chatroulette doing away with the chat? Chatroulette’s founder, Andrey Ternowsky, told NewTeeVee that the future of the site might focus entirely on telepresence and do away with text chat completely.

Just a few months ago everyone was talking about Chatroulette – trying it out with their friends, posting Chatroulette parody videos on YouTube, and generally going crazy for the site. However, in the last couple months, Chatroulette Fever has been dying down. With the exception of a new Merton Chatroulette piano improv video released by Merton earlier this month, I can’t remember the last time I heard any Chatroulette-related news. It seems that Chatroulette is aware of this major wane in popularity and are trying to do something about it with the launch of two new features – Localroulette and Channelroulette.

ChatRoulette, that viral sensation that allows people to chat with random people, has spawned all types of unusual behaviour and business, and is about to be part of a unique theater-based event called The ChatRoulette Show. The show will use a live internet connection projecting an encounter with show performers as well as the live audience. The show will also have a drinking game component based on the different people they see. These types of new social experiences are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to live entertainment leveraging new social media, in my opinion.

Amsterdam-based condom specialty shop Condomerie has been going guerrilla on Chatroulette with their new marketing campaign, designed to spread awareness about the risks of HIV. The campaign consists of a hot woman, seemingly topless, holding a sign that says, “BINGO. You’re now in touch with a HIV infected person. Don’t play Russian roulette in real life. Condomerie.com.”

While some people have taken this opportunity to strip down to their skivvies and get a little too comfortable with their fellow Chatrouletters, many users have chosen to get a little more creative with the unique opportunity that Chatroulette affords.
