After being tasked with searching for a Twitter application in the iPhone store, an educated student was unable to find a Twitter application in the app store. After searching for minutes, she couldn’t find a Twitter application. The user also wanted a free one to start with but she couldn’t find one except after being helped by the researcher in the room. This was a video presented at the Chirp conference to illustrate a problem the company faced and it also explained by the company acquired Tweetie.

Twitter dropped a statistical bombshell today: the company has 180 million daily active users. While only 105 million of those have actually registered, Twitter clearly has a huge opportunity on their hands considering that Facebook has 200 million daily active users. This is a staggering statistic and shows that they definitely have the potential to compete with Facebook although there are still clearly hurdles ahead.

Tomorrow marks Twitter’s first ever developer conference and there are a number of things that we’d expect to come out of the event (we’ll cover in more depth over a couple of posts). One thing that could be announced is a competitor to Facebook’s fbFund, which funds developers building applications on top of the Facebook Platform. Details of that fund could be revealed in a panel between Kara Swisher
and investors Mike Hirshland, David Pakman, Bijan Sabet, and Peter Fenton.

The Chirp conference, which takes place in San Francisco, will have a number of Twitter staff presenting, including CEO/ co-founder Ev Williams, co-founder Biz Stone, COO Dick Costolo, and Director of Platform Ryan Sarver.
