New Media Index: Bloggers Are Budget-Minded, While Tweeters Scan the List of the U.K.’s Elite Tweeters

President Barack Obama‘s $3.73 trillion budget proposal was the subject of the most news links shared by bloggers, while The Independent‘s list of the United Kingdom’s 100 most influential and elite people on Twitter was the most-Tweeted news link, and the most-watched news and politics video on YouTube for the second week in a row was the Feb. 7 edition of The Philip Defranco Show, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index for the week of Feb. 14-18.

The budget accounted for 22 percent of news links shared via the blogosphere, and it was followed by: the situation in Egypt following the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, at 21 percent; an item from The Washington Post about a new Wal-Mart being built in the Northeast part of Washington, D.C., at 10 percent; another Washington Post story about anti-government protests in Iran, at 6 percent; and Chris Cillizza‘s summary of winners and losers from the Conservative Political Action Conference for The Washington Post, also at 6 percent.

Chris Cillizza’s The Fast Fix Gives The Washington Post, Yahoo! a Quick Fix

The Washington Post head of video editorial Steven King told Beet.TV the newspaper and Yahoo! have enjoyed a quick fix from The Fast Fix, a co-branded 60-second daily video update in which Chris Cillizza, managing editor of PostPolitics and author of blog The Fix, updates news from the Beltway. The Fast Fix has reached 1 million views per day, virtually equaling the viewership of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show, although, as Beet.TV points out, a comparison of a one-minute Webcast and a 60-minute television show is stretching it a bit.

NBC's 'Meet the Press' Hosts Pre-Election Web Show

Political junkies that can’t wait until Tuesday night to get their David Gregory fix now have another option. NBC’s “Meet the Press” has produced a special web show “The Final Countdown,” previewing the midterms.

Gregory moderates the program, and is joined by National Journal‘s Charlie Cook, Politico’s Jonathan Martin, the Washington Post‘s Chris Cillizza and NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell.

“Sometimes an hour on Sunday is just not enough,” said MTP Executive Producer Betsy Fischer in a statement. “With so many interesting races, themes and issues to discuss, we wanted to go a bit deeper and spend some extra time looking at the impact of Tuesday’s big election.”

The Washington Post, Yahoo! News to Provide Political Followers with The Fast Fix

The Washington Post teamed up with Yahoo! News on daily video series The Fast Fix, which features PostPolitics.com managing editor and The Fix author Chris Cillizza analyzing the day’s political news in around 60 seconds.

The Fast Fix will be executive-produced by Erik Rydholm, an Emmy Award winner who created Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption for ESPN, and it will combine Cillizza’s commentary with reader submissions and social media.

The Washington Post managing editor Raju Narisetti said:

Since Chris Cillizza joined The Washington Post, his unique way of offering news and analysis has captured political aficionados and novices alike. We’re always looking for smart, new ways to engage our readers, and we’re excited to work with Yahoo! to offer a series of original, compelling videos. The Fast Fix is a vibrant extension of Cillizza’s reporting that provides the most critical political news of the day for our online readers who might want more of The Fix or are crunched for time.

Yahoo! News head Mark Walker added:

Chris and The Washington Post will complement the distinct editorial voice of Yahoo! News’ original video programs and blogs. We expect The Fast Fix to become the daily fix for The Washington Post readers and Yahoo! News’ 90 million-strong monthly audience.

Washington Post, ABC News Team up for Revamped ‘Top Line’ Webcast

ABC News and The Washington Post are teaming up to present a new version of “Top Line,” ABCNews.com’s daily political webcast.

The co-branded, 15-minute show will now feature a Washington Post journalist each day in a segment called “Post Politics.” The show is hosted by ABC News’ Political Director David Chalian and Senior Political Reporter and author of ‘The Note,’ Rick Klein and airs weekdays at NoonET on ABCNEWS.com and, beginning Monday, on WashingtonPost.com.

“We’re thrilled to be able to present our viewers with this new, co-branded show, highlighting not only ABC’s political reporting, but reporting from the Washington Post as well,” says Sara Just, Senior Producer for Digital Media at ABC News.

The midday webcast will relaunch under the new partnership on Monday.

Washington Post Forces Name Change For ABC News Web Series

On Monday, March 9 ABCNews.com launched “The Fix,” a daily Web series featuring various ABC News correspondents and anchors.

TheFix2_3.21.bmpWell, last week, WebNewser has learned, lawyers from The Washington Post sent a cease and desist letter to ABC News telling them the name “The Fix” is theirs. And it appears ABC News has complied. On the front page of ABCNews.com there is a section of stories, but no mention that they are part of the series.

On the day ABCNews.com launched The Fix, WebNewser reported The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza uses the title for his Twitter profile. It’s also the name of Cillizza’s blog at the Post – a blog he’s written since 2005. WebNewser has also learned ABCNews.com is in the process of coming up with new names for the series.

So, what is driving The Washington Post to take this so seriously? And should ABC News give in? After all, ABC News and WaPo often partner on editorial projects most notably the ABC News/Washington Post poll.

> Update on Sunday at 10pmET: An insider tells WebNewser a new name is coming and there will be a video on ABCNews.com soon from Bill Weir explaining it all. From John Berman’s Twitter feed (@ABCDude) it looks like the name is revealed. He tweets: “What is the biggest question on your mind? About anything. Need ideas for the ‘Quick Fix.’ Any question: serious, smart, funny..even lame.”

The Fix Comes to CNN’s Morning Show

AMFix_3.16.jpgCNN’s American Morning (6am-9amET) has made some changes to its presence on CNN.com. They’ve launched a new blog called amFIX, which replaces the old show page. The blog will be integrated with the TV program allowing viewers to comment on the stories they’ve seen on-air.

American Morning’s correspondents will contribute original online news stories in the form of blog posts with accompanying embedded video. Contributors include anchors Kiran Chetry and John Roberts, and correspondents Jim Acosta, Jason Carroll, Alina Cho, Carol Costello, Lola Ogunnaike and Christine Romans.

And, The Fix is becoming a popular term. Last week we wrote about ABCNews.com’s new web series called “The Fix,” and the popular Twitter following of Washington Post reporter Chris Cillizza.

American Morning has set up a Twitter page too, called AMFix.

“The Fix” is in at ABC….and WaPo Too

ABC News is expanding its digital only content with the launch of The Fix. The Web show features ABC News correspondents/anchors John Berman, Juju Chang, Dan Harris and Bill Weir, and ESPN’s John Anderson. Andrew Morse, who is also EP of GMA weekend is the executive producer of The Fix.

Weir hosts the debut episode of “The Fix” with the ongoing series “Accidental News.” It includes a Charlie Gibson pseudo obscenity and Weir sleeping on some stranger’s couch in Madrid. Let’s watch:

Tomorrow, Chang continues her “Juju Juggles” series which began around the time of the Inauguration. Berman, Harris and Anderson round out the week.

Interestingly, The Fix is also the name of Washington Post reporter Chris Cillizza‘s blog as well as his Twitter @thefix (currently 7,841 followers) and @TheHyperFix (3,394 followers), the less “mellow” feed of the two.
