Twitter’s Super Moment on Super Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday, at 10:07:16 p.m. ET, Twitter reached a new record for Tweets per second during a sporting event, 4,064, topping the previous mark of 3,283, during Japan’s 3-1 victory over Denmark during FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. The all-time mark of 6,939 Tweets per second, reached just after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Eve, was never threatened, however.

Twitter added that Usher‘s surprise appearance during the halftime show by the Black Eyed Peas was responsible for the second-largest spike in Tweets during the game, followed by the headline act, Slash, Eminem, Christina Aguilera, and the first player on the list, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The “Pug Attack” commercial for Doritos took the Twitter crown, followed by ads from Audi, Pepsi, Chevy, Coca-Cola, and Groupon.

Audition for American Idol via MySpace

Auditions for the 10th season of American Idol are under way, and potential contestants don’t even have to wait in line: Through Oct. 6, singers and wannabe singers between 15 and 28 can submit audition videos via MySpace.

Songs from artists including Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Maroon 5 can be chosen, and audition videos can be shared via other social networks, such as Facebook and twitter

MySpace hosted similar auditions for Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, and MySpace Karaoke general manager Mari Bower discussed other previous related initiatives in a post on the MySpace Blog:

The American Idol auditions on MySpace are an extension of our talent-discovery program as we give our users even more unique opportunities in entertainment, including our recent successful auditions programs. As most of you know, we held the MySpace Glee casting call last spring, which brought a whopping 34,000 audition submissions, more than 105 million gold stars given, and 23 million video views. We also just announced the latest member of the If I Can Dream house, cast directly from MySpace, Jordyn Mallory. Check out her time in the house so far and get more info her and the rest of the talented cast here.

MySpace’s New Online Music Model

MySpace_Music_Site.jpg

CNNMoney.com reports that MySpace Music, scheduled to launch in September, promises to be the most significant rollout of a digital-music service since Apple’s iTunes.

They have reason to be enthusiastic, at least in terms of the scope of MySpace’s latest offering. Remember, MySpace began life as a social networking service for musicians, and had plenty of tools to help them share music and spread the word about their bands.

The new site will enable MySpace users to listen to any song from the catalogs of the three music giants free, the article said. “There will be on-screen ads along with that music, but yes, it will be free. And that includes U2 and Jay-Z-and Christina Aguilera, Kid Rock, and rap superstar T.I.,” due to the linkup with three of the four major labels.

The idea is that there will be a one-click link to iTunes or Windows Media Player, via Amazon-backed technology, to buy the song the person is currently listening to. That’s the real innovation. The comparisons to MTV (as in “this generation’s MTV”) may be a little premature, but we’ll soon see how well it does.
