Allow Jay-Z and Bing to Reintroduce Themselves

Jay-Z, Bing, and creative agency Droga5 teamed up to create a “multiplatform search experience and interactive game” to promote the hip-hop icon’s first book, Decoded, which will hit bookstores Nov. 16.

Decoded deciphers the hidden meanings behind Jay-Z’s songs and lyrics, and all 300 pages of the book will appear in unlikely places such as pools, pool tables, bronze plaques, and clothing racks, with fans using Bing, Bing Maps, and Bing Entertainment to search for clues.

Pages will be placed in locations relevant to their content, including the Brooklyn neighborhood where Jay-Z grew up, the London streets that inspired him, and his Manhattan empire. A total of 200 prizes will be awarded to fans who locate pages, including one grand-prize winner, who will receive two tickets to Jay-Z and Coldplay in concert in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve.

Audition for American Idol via MySpace

Auditions for the 10th season of American Idol are under way, and potential contestants don’t even have to wait in line: Through Oct. 6, singers and wannabe singers between 15 and 28 can submit audition videos via MySpace.

Songs from artists including Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Whitney Houston, and Maroon 5 can be chosen, and audition videos can be shared via other social networks, such as Facebook and twitter

MySpace hosted similar auditions for Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, and MySpace Karaoke general manager Mari Bower discussed other previous related initiatives in a post on the MySpace Blog:

The American Idol auditions on MySpace are an extension of our talent-discovery program as we give our users even more unique opportunities in entertainment, including our recent successful auditions programs. As most of you know, we held the MySpace Glee casting call last spring, which brought a whopping 34,000 audition submissions, more than 105 million gold stars given, and 23 million video views. We also just announced the latest member of the If I Can Dream house, cast directly from MySpace, Jordyn Mallory. Check out her time in the house so far and get more info her and the rest of the talented cast here.

EMI Looks to Offload Music Distribution

Pink_Floyd.jpg

Could this be the first crack in the four major record labels’ facade? EMI, one of the world’s largest record companies, is considering offloading its distribution, sales and marketing operations to one of its three key rivals, Fortune reports, in an effort to reduce its red ink, music industry sources said on Friday.

EMI’s catalog contains stalwarts such as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Coldplay, and the Beach Boys. The anonymous sources said that EMI would prefer it if they could outsource all of their distribution, as well as license away their jazz and classical music division. No one is talking on the record, but stay tuned; we’ll call ‘em as we see ‘em.

EMI Deal Imminent with MySpace Music

CNET News reports that EMI is close to joining the three other major labels in supporting the upcoming MySpace Music service, according to two sources close to the negotiations.

“EMI and MySpace representatives were ‘trying to jump some final hurdles,’ according to one of the sources adding that the companies could finalize a deal in time for the launch of MySpace’s new iTunes competitor.” The deal would give MySpace Music access to artists such as Coldplay and Joss Stone.

The report said that the MySpace Music store is expected to offer free streaming music and sell MP3s without copy-protection software, as well as ringtones, concert tickets, and other related items. Since Universal, Sony BMG, and Warner were already behind the idea, it was only a matter of time before EMI would get jealous, as these things usually tend to turn out.
