What's Moving Online Privacy? From Congress to the White House…

Marking a new front in the battle over online privacy, the Obama administration, for the first time, explicitly called on Congress to approve a “consumer privacy bill of rights” that would regulate the collection of personal data on the Internet. The push from the White House will likely give a boost to the many privacy bills floating in Congress, but what’s next, and what does it all mean for consumers, and constituents? We take a look at the road ahead.

What Happens During A 'Budget Twitter Town Hall'?

How do you solve a crisis like the federal budget? With a tweet, of course, hoped House Democrats who hosted a Twitter town hall meeting on Thursday to field questions about the budget. And exactly what happens when Members of Congress try to solve a national crisis in 140 characters or less?

John McCain and John Kerry Propose "Online Privacy Bill of Rights"

The latest bills center on the most contentious topics, creation of a ‘Do Not Track’ mechanism that would allow consumers to ‘opt-out’ of targeted online advertising, and mobile privacy. What are the proposals, and what do they mean for you?

10 Politicans That Every Politico Needs To Follow on Twitter

Political news travels fast — it can take more than a few New York Times articles to stay on top of the rumor mill. For news junkies, Twitter is great as an alternative source for journalism. But if you’re truly interested in the twists and turns of politics at its feistiest, Twitter becomes even more useful as it lets you follow specific politicians to see what they’re up to and what their most recent soundbytes are revealing. If you’re a politico and you know it, raise your hand….and then follow these 10 politicians on Twitter. continued…

With just weeks to go before the November midterms that could send many of them home, lawmakers return to Washington this week for the September work period: four weeks of writing and trying to pass bills quickly so they can get back on the campaign trail.

But first, it’s a packed agenda. Lawmakers will have to make decisions on tax cuts, spending bills and federal stimulus projects before they can return home. Left unclear is where, with partisan tensions high, other issues, like net neutrality and privacy, will fall in line. We take a look ahead at the top social media issues awaiting Congress’s return…

National Journal, a site for nonpartisan reporting on current politics, has teamed with New Media Strategies and JESS3 in order to provide an exclusive networking community for members of congress and their staff. This secure portion of the National Journal site will be for work purposes, communication and collaborative efforts between congressional members and staff.

The new network is called 3121, and it’s aiming to make life “easier” for the sie members. You’ll need to submit a request in order to access the site, though a public blog is available as a basic resource within the National Journal site. 3121 is actually in beta, so there is likely to be a lot of experimentation and ongoing improvements to this network, as it is among the first to be a professional networking tool created specifically for members of congress.
