Meebo's XAuth Attempts To Challenge Facebook Connect

Facebook might be trying to take over the Web in order to provide users with more targeted ads, but if Meebo has their way, websites will use XAuth to authenticate user login instead of Facebook Connect — also possibly with the purpose of serving up ads. The advtange for Meebo is that not only would XAuth broaden the social media user base for login authentication, but they have some big names behind them, including Google.

Twitter's Legitimate Attack Against Facebook Connect

At last week’s SXSW, Twitter CEO Evan Williams announced the impending launch of their new product @anywhere, but so far even the most savvy followers are confused about the implications of the new product (Matthew Ingram called the launch a “whimper“). In addition to new images of the product (included in a video by Twitter at SXSW last week), we’ll highlight why we believe Twitter’s new @anywhere product will have a legitimate chance of taking on Facebook Connect.

Nissan and NFL Canada Launch Social Games Promotion

NFL Canada and Nissan have partnered to bring you their latest social media campaign, a contest where you “Play NFL Social Games and you could win a Nissan Pathfinder”. By signing in using your Facebook account, and playing quiz, trivia, concentration and other social games, players are able to win chances to get a new car. Considering the good quality of the games, the various social elements and the Facebook Connect, this campaign seems to be a good use of Social Gaming.

College Kids and Parents Connect Online. Is This Bad?

A new study from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills in the United Kingdom reports that more British parents are using newer technology to stay connected with their children away at school, according to AllHeadlines.

Now, my mother and I weren’t always the best of friends, but while in college I still called her every Sunday afternoon. Back then, I called her on her landline. She rarely used her cell phone and had no idea how to send or receive text messages. Things have changed in the past few years, and my mother now happily embraces her Blackberry, email and LinkedIn. But how much easier would things have been if my mother had been on an online social network when I was in college?
