American Idol is kicking off their tenth season with something a little different – they are opening up their talent search to MySpace, giving contestants the opportunity to participate in auditions from the comfort of home. Simon Fuller, creator and producer of American Idol, said “Involving MySpace means now – for the first time – artists can post their auditions online prior to attending our live auditions. We are hoping and expecting this to be the biggest ever talent search in our history.”

“The Good Wife”, a relatively new CBS drama which looks absolutely horrendous, has used Twitter as the basis for one of their upcoming episodes. The video is pretty hilarious (embedded below). Episode promotion opens: cue dramatic music as voice over states “Alicia is sleeping with her boss and using him to get promoted”. This is something that was posted to one of the show’s character’s Twitter accounts.

As a Canadian, last night’s Olympic Men’s Hockey loss to the United States shed some light on the new experiences that social media can bring to sporting events and rivalries. Specifically, as I ventured post-game into the world of Twitter, I was supported by my friends’ similar reactions. We theorized back and forth about the reasoning behind the loss from halfway across the country, and posted links and analysis that helped us understand the game. Social media was effective in helping me connect and learn about this new experience.
