It’s not just a coincidence that newer games are based off of older gaming concepts. Gaming developers do this purposely, why? If it worked once, it will work again.

Social gaming has some 250 million+ players on Facebook alone, its top companies have valuations in the billions, it attracts heavy investment from major corporations like EA, Disney, and Google, but here’s something social gaming doesn’t really have: Its own Wikipedia entry. As of this writing, Wikipedia’s Social Games entry is a placeholder, while the “Social casual games” entry is less than 100 words long, and even more shocking, comes with an editor’s note, “This article may not meet [Wikipedia's] general notability guideline.” Seriously! By contrast, even though they’re niche genres relative to social gaming, Wikipedia’s MMORPG entry is almost 4000 words, while the entry on first-person shooters is over 3000. So what’s the deal? FarmVille players can now engage in organic farming both on and off their virtual fields. In the first move of its kind, FarmVille has partnered with Cascadian Farm to provide players with opportunities to enjoy Cascadian branded crops on their painstakingly plowed fields as well as in the grocery store. He discusses how his previous company, MyMiniLife, was acquired and integrated into FarmVille, how to deal with the massive scaling necessary on a game like FarmVille, and the biggest surprise he encountered over the last year. Just this week Sorority Life, one of the most popular Facebook games, was released on Android and with recent announcements from Zynga, we can expect to see more social games begin to appear on mobile devices. Zynga specifically announced that their most popular game, FarmVille, will soon be available on the iPhone, and just as with their expansions to other platforms, other games will soon follow.
