Fashion Up-And-Comer Credits Social Media With Quick Ascent

CBC news recently told aspiring Canadian fashion designers to pay attention to Amanda Lew Kee. Why? The LG Fashion Week-featured designer credits her success to social media, a lesson to be learned for Toronto designers looking to put themselves on the fashion map.

Last year, the Fashion Design Council of Canada collaborated with The Fashion Collective, a creative agency focused on young, up-and-coming designers. The collaboration gave Lew Kee a chance to showcase her work on the runway at this year’s LG Fashion Week.

Lew Kee engaged with social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter to circulate information about the shows and foster a following of fans. Through her use of social media and her collaboration with The Fashion Collective, Lew Kee brings a new generation of fashionistas to Toronto’s style scene; the audience at her show on Friday night at LG Fashion Week was the youngest crowd to line the runway all week, with most audience members under the age of twenty-five.

According to CBC, many current designers haven’t updated their website in years, which could leave them lagging behind as the fashion industry goes digital. CBC advises young designers to offer RSS options on their homepage, as well as to create Twitter and Facebook profiles to add to their online presence.

For aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere—not just those in the fashion industry—it’s high time to get in the social media game.
