Adobe has confirmed a rumor first reported last night by ZDNet that it is ceasing developing of the Flash Player for mobile devices. In reality the announcement will have little impact on users, but it is getting wide spread press because of the role Flash played in the early days of the smartphone market.

Blip.tv: Out with Flash, in with HTML5

Blip.tv co-founder and chief technology officer Justin Day told Beet.TV founder and executive producer Andy Plesser the online-video site will adopt HTML5 as its standard player for the Web and other platforms, replacing Adobe’s Flash.

Day told Beet.TV HTML5 runs within the browser without a plug-in, and “faster.” Beet.TV uses Blip.tv as its principal video player. continued…

Flash-Capable Mobile Browser Makes $1 Million in a Weekend

Cross-platform mobile web browser SkyFire has earned nearly $1 million over a single weekend after it’s appearance on Apple’s iOS app store.

SkyFire launched for iOS devices last Wednesday at $2.99 a pop. However demand for the program was so great that the company SkyFire Labs temporarily pulled the app down after just five hours to keep their servers from being overloaded. The company then allowed users to download the app in more controlled batches.

SkyFire’s claim to fame is its ability to run Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Quicktime web content without additional plugins. Flash video is pre-processed on the SkyFire servers so it can be played in the mobile browser; a feature that iOS devices such as the iPhone and the iPad lack.

Over the first weekend on the iOS store, SkyFire was downloaded more than 300,000 times, according to MobileCrunch. After Apple’s 30% cut, the SkyFire team will still get between $600,000 and $700,000. Had the company been prepared for the barrage of initial downloads, they might have made even more during that time period.

While SkyFire charges money for the iOS version, the browser is available for free on other mobile platforms such as Google’s Android OS.

Flash Is Dead! Long Live Flash! (Apple vs. Adobe on the iPad)

Apple changed its mind and will now allow Flash apps on iPads, iPhones and iPods. This comes soon after web designers declared Flash doomed and reverses Apple’s App Store banning of Flash-based Apps and refusal to support Flash on the iPad tablet. Pundits were expecting a creative exodus away from Flash to HTML5, but now Apple has given Flash a new lease on life. The drama left me wondering “What’s going on?”, “Is this Important?” and “What is Flash, anyway?”. My findings after the jump.

In fact, the “AddThis” feature on everything from magazine to social networking sites has become so commonplace that even the savviest of Internet consumers may not realize the information they give away each time they click that button.

But now the convenient feature is very much in the spotlight thanks to a federal lawsuit claiming the company behind AddThis, Clearspring Technologies, broke the law by using the widget to gather information on users, including children. The suit was filed in the central district of California by attorneys for a group of minors and their parents.
